The Magickal and Mystical
Uses of Runes
(How to Read Runes and
use them in Magick)
Learning Basic Rune Meanings
As with all methods of divining, the symbols involved have basic meanings which can be learned, but a professional Rune Reader will go way beyond the basic meanings. The rune sigils are a tool to tap into the infinite knowledge buried deep within your very soul.
There are 3 very distinct steps to learning how to read runes but it is best to learn them all at the same time rather than trying to master one then the next. They include: 1) Learning the basic meaning of each rune. 2) Learning the various layouts. 3) Allowing the runes to tap into the Universal knowledge within you. Let's start with the basic meanings.
In learning the basic meanings, you will find a mundane meaning for each rune, a divinatory meaning and magickal uses. No course on learning Runes could be complete without exploring all 3 levels.
There is debate within the Rune users communities of the world whether all runes should be read right side up with only one meaning, or if Merkstave or a reversed meaning should be used. I personally believe runes have a reversed meaning just like tarot cards do and have included that information here.
Runes are divided into 3 Aettir (or groups of 8) This helps you remember their order and several authors have noted certain pairings and groupings within the order (cattle / aurochs, hagalaz / nauthiz / isa, etc.), but so far the meaning of the overall pattern has remained a mystery.
In this early stage, do not worry about the deeper meanings of each rune. You are only interested in getting the basic meaning learned so you will have an understanding to build upon as you delve deeper into the rune. A basic analysis is given for each rune but it is not necessary for you to memorize all of it at this point in time.
